How fit do I need to be? How strenuous is each day's activity?
The paddling is at a pace suited for learning and discovery. Anyone in reasonable fitness can participate. We have many options for routes among the islands. Our daily mileage ranges from 2 to 9 miles depending on the weather and the interests of the group.

What size will the group be?
We prefer the dynamics of smaller gatherings, especially while teaching. The group size is limited to 8 participants.

What are the accommodations like?
Our first night's accommodations are at an historic inn on the Stonington waterfront. Guests may arrive at any time after 3 pm on day one and enjoy the quaint setting on the southern shores of Deer Isle. For the following two nights we camp on the Maine islands. We provide two-person tents and all of the necessary group camping gear to make your nights in the fresh air relaxed and memorable.

What are the meals like?
We begin with a home-cooked breakfast at the inn on the morning of day two. The remaining meals are prepared by our guides on the Maine islands. Our dishes include generous amounts of fresh fruits and vegetables and are often supplemented by the fresh mussels and lobster available along the way. With advance notice, we can certainly accommodate any special dietary requirements you may have.

What if I'm traveling solo?
The groups on our tours are typically comprised of a mix of couples and singles. Our accommodations are based on two people per room. If you are traveling alone, we will assign a roommate of the same gender. If you prefer a private room, you will be required to pay a single supplement fee of $70, subject to availability.

What is the typical weather like?
The month of September is typically very pleasant on the Maine coast and there is less likelihood of experiencing the thick fog that can blanket the coast during the summer months. Average daytime highs range from the mid-60's to the mid-70's. Overnight lows are typically around 50 degrees. As with all weather, however, we should come prepared for departure from the average. We will mail you a suggested packing list when we confirm your reservation.

Can I bring my own boat?
Certainly. This is the only trip that we offer that requires previous paddling experience, and most of the participants own their own equipment. You can bring it along if you'd like, or use ours. If you do not yet own a marine compass, we provide clip-on models that can be used on any kayak with deck lines forward of the cockpit.
